CEBU, PHILIPPINES — Light Play, real texture and feel of the images, dedication and of course, hard work. These factors created the best images and portrayed a story that only Mr. Neal Oshima can do. With his portraits, you can see years and years of accumulated experience and passion for taking not just photos but memories.

Some may see him as a snob or somebody you cant get along with, but mind you, he was the most down to earth and grounded person I had met. He was just one street savvy smart guy who really invested time, effort and money on honing his craft. Words won’t be enough to describe the wonders this guy can make with his keen eye and lens.

Browsing through his galleries of photos made me travel to the places I haven’t been to. He was able to capture texture, nuance, layers with varying degrees of lighting. He even tipped that we can capture great photos even with a cellphone camera as long as there is sufficient lighting. Looks like I will have to pursue one childhood dream, and that is to capture the greatest photos with the lens of my camera. Soon. 🙂

Here are some of the photos taken during his exhibit in SM City Cebu at the North Wing [just across Duty Free Philippines]. Feel free to browse on it and revel on the scenery unfolding right before your eyes.

  • That picture of the lechon in the course of its cooking was really fascinating but what I really loved about the series is the way how he captures the fines needed to produce something that, in our eyes, is so normal and ordinary but is actually such a wonder to watch while it’s made. It makes us see how elegant and diverse our culture actually is. Especially when it comes to food.

    • TRUE! I was really amazed as to the how and why he chose food as his main subject. Apparently, what may seem normal for us sparked curiosity and passion on his own eyes.

  • Why didn’t I know about this huhu I’ve always fancied simple shots with great stories. There is always something different with a photographer’s eye versus a photographer and a story teller’s vision. I wish I could be like him one day– ONE DAY!

    • Yes I was also surprised! I didn’t know he was that deep. He really gave straight to the point answers to the queries thrown to him.

  • You got me since that suman photo! I know these are only photographs but they do make me hungry!

  • The captions really bring to life the seemingly normal food we consume here in Cebu. Digging through our history and culture is really a fascinating experience for me. I do hope more Cebuanos or Filipinos feel the same pride and enthusiasm as I do in these sorts of subject
